“Community Coaching” the way to a healthier, more active DC

Octane was tasked by the DC Department of Health with developing the agency’s wellness campaign, Live Well DC!that focuses on the 10 leading indicators of preventable death.  We charged this full throttle with Keep It Moving DC!, a multi-platform campaign featuring District residents from every targeted neighborhood as “community coaches.” Captured in print and video engaged in physical activity, community coaches modeled moving for better health. We developed MyLiveWellDC.com, a website driven by an interactive portal of the community coaches’ written and video healthy living activity journals streamed through YouTube and Twitter, as well as included randomly generated healthy living tips and advice.
We also supported this campaign with well-designed printed extensive materials, including brochures, palm cards and promotional items to community partners for dissemination among key subpopulations. Our implementation of a corresponding media buy for radio, print, outdoor transit and online outlets proved very successful, particularly in the promotion of the more than 40 planned and executed major events around the program’s four priority tenants. The events showcased dance and fitness instruction by local trainers, cooking demonstrations by area chefs, mobile units offering health services such as HIV testing and eye exams, and prominent District residents on the move. This campaign reflects Octane’s ability to address health behaviors among multiple target audiences: seniors, African Americans, Latino/Hispanics, and residents living in economically disadvantaged communities.
